Pittcon Reflections

I've returned from Pittcon and noticed a few things that I thought I'd share. First, the show continues to shrink, both in attendance and in booth personnel. On a personal note, I was sad to see the Mercado on Universal Blvd was torn down. I really used to enjoy the British pub that used to be there....some of the best Shepard's Pie I've found!

I did not see too many new vendors displaying this year compared to years past and those I did see were not in the lab consumables market, which was disappointing as we're always looking for ways to enhance our line card.

It was nice to meet several of our new dealers for the first time as many were walking the floor. From what I've gathered in my discussions, there seems to be reason for optimism in 2010, particularly in the international market. Many folks I've talked to were very encouraged with how the years has started. Now how much of that is a reflection on the poor January/February 2009 is yet to be seen, but I'm starting to see more confidence out there.

I'm looking forward to heading to NSTA in a couple of weeks as well as a lengthy trip through Philadelphia/North Jersey to visit distributors. I'm very anxious to get a feel for dealer confidence in 2010 with regards to science education; again, everything I'm hearing so far sounds promising!

Best regards,

John

PITTCON thoughts and Industry Trends

With Pittcon just a few short days away, let me first say how happy I am that the show is out of Chicago. I foresee significantly less travel issues for the thousands of attendees and exhibitors with the show being in Orlando. Last year, there was noticeably smaller booths and less traffic on the floor. With 2010 starting off a little stronger from what I can see, I'm expecting to see a bit more traffic on the floor of the show.

I'm anxious to see how the US economy has opened the door for suppliers of consumable lab suppliers offering economical alternatives to the name branded products as budgets are tighter than I've seen in my ten years in the business. United Scientific has some very nice, low cost, bottle top dispensers that are just now starting to find their way into laboratories across the country. United Scientific also has lab coats for a fraction of the cost of the "status quo" which save our mutual customers quite a bit of money without sacrificing quality. I'm anticipating products such as these to work very well in the industrial/research market this year. Contact me for details or samples.

We're now starting our visits to our distributors this year to show new products and principals and I look forward to visiting many of you and/or seeing you at Pittcon/NSTA.

PITTCON coming up!

Pittcon 2010 in Orlando takes place between February 28 and March 4 this year. I will be at the show March 1 through March 3. None of our principals will have booths this year, ergo I'll be walking the floor most of the time and it may be difficult to find me. If you'd like to set up a meeting with me to discuss any issues or learn more about our new products this year, please email me at JGura@fischertech.com and we can set a mutually convenient appointment.

I look forward to seeing many of you!

2010 Dealer Pricing starting to be released!

I'm sure we're all feeling the strain of the economy this year, but things have been picking up lately. I'll be interested to see how this plays into 2010. At Fischer Technical, we're trying to do our part to keep the momentum. We're holding our prices through 2010!

As of today, our principals Quincy Lab, Accurate Wirecraft, Feenixx Publishing, and Kerkau Mfg have confirmed holding 2010 prices. United Scientific will be releasing their 2010 price list soon as well and the current plan is to hold about 95-99% of the prices through 2010.

We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

How have your other vendors been treating 2010 prices?

Take care!
